SAW Local: 4 Week Comics Workshop with Miden Wood Starting April 9, 2024

Come join us in the SAW space for four weeks of comics play with visiting artist, Miden Wood.

4 Week Workshop: Surprise Yourself, Surprise Your Reader with Miden Wood Starting Tuesday April 9 From 7PM to 9PM

Few media hold as much opportunity for surprise as comics. You see a single-panel image, the caption surprises you; you move from one panel to the next, new context surprises you; you turn the page, and, bam! A big, splashy reveal. And, because writing and drawing use different parts of our brains, making comics also presents the unusual opportunity to surprise ourselves.

In this 4-week course, participants will use the relationship between words and images to generate unexpected ideas (to quote one past participant, "I don't know WHERE that came from"), and then turn that same sense of surprise on the reader in multi-panel and multi-page projects. From jokes to jump scares, there are so many opportunities in comics to set an expectation and then subvert it—so let's keep our readers guessing!
