Brendan Burford stops by SAW

Banjo enthusiast, record collector, cartoonist and King Features Editor, Brendan Burford stopped by SAW to speak to the students about the comics industry, history, business, aesthetics and craft. Brendan’s got a lot of opinions and a lot of good advice. The discussion varied from topics of genre and originality, fundamentals and tradition, communicating via mass-printing and all sorts of  variations on craft and the methods of becoming an artist. We tried to unpack Brendan’s advice of “get good”, by applying the our critical thinking to our practice, and our “punching the clock.” Do we work while being critical? Do we apply our critical thinking after we work? Before we work? None of this was easily reconcilable or one-size-fits-all. The final advice?

“Be a complicated human being.”

After the discussions, we convened to the bar to play an impromptu version of the BBC game, Just A Minute. Thanks Brendan, Justine, Leela and SAW students for another great event.
