Note from a student

This note came from Michael Glover, a many-time student of mine. I thought I’d answer him here. Tom, Hey man, just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for introducing me to the world of comics and for being a great inspiration! I believe you hold the record for the number of times I’ve taken a class with an instructor (4 times!) and that says a lot!…

Fumetti Photo Shoot

We spent the last afternoon of the NYC HEATWAVE shooting our fumetti in Prospect Park. The heat caused us to reschedule from 2pm to 6pm, causing us to lose hours of light. We shot the last scenes in a pizza parlor where our underaged extras partook in a well-deserved beer. The plot involves two characters created by Jason Little, chasing after one Stacey Nightmare , whose twitter feed is…

More about SAW-in-progress, May 2011

For those interested in more details about our school-to-be, The Sequential Artists Workshop, or SAW. We’ll be opening in late 2011/early 2012 in Gainesville, Florida. Gainesville is a university town with a lot of culture and we feel it’s a great place to become a cartoonist. There is a sub-department in the English department there which is dedicated to studying and writing about comics in depth; they even publish…

Visiting Dash Shaw in the studio

Stephanie was dispatched this week over to interview Dash Shaw for Seriously, Comics. Not sure what they discussed, but she sent some pics. This is a good time to remind you all of Dash and John Cameron Mitchell’s kickstarter for the animation project that is hinted at in these pics and can be learned about here: http://www.kickstarter.com/e/Jwbmj/projects/999818113/the-ruined-cast-an-animated-feature-by-dash-shaw-0

Visting Keith Mayerson in the studio

One thing I wanted to do before leaving New York City was visit Keith Mayerson’s studio and bother him long enough to tease more of his approaches to art making out of him. Since I started teaching at SVA in 2001, Keith has always been a welcoming mentor and friend. He is open to every student’s ideas, and like me, believes that the more people can access their inner…
