In 2015, When I finished Rosalie's book, I still had a lot of processing to do. I wanted to further understand what I had went through.
I looked at the books that had inspired me, and I asked what made them great, useful, inspiring.
I came up with a list of about 26 graphic memoirs that really moved me, gave me insight into the medium, and kept me going.
David B.'s Epileptic taught me about visual metaphor and the power of creating your own language.
Carol Tyler taught me about doggedness, and turning your life over to a project.
Alison Bechdel taught me to use my intellect
Eddie Campbell taught me about expressive lines and art
Joe Chiappetta taught me "This is not the bomb squad. Take unnecessary risks."
Oliver Ka and Alfred taught me it's possible to change your life with a book.
I want to show you glimpses of these 6 plus 20 more, plus show you what I went through, piece by piece.
In the sections marked MY STORY I’ll show how I pulled through. What I hung on to to keep going. What choices I made, what choices I didn’t make.
In the DO THIS sections I’ll outline more than 50 exercises to keep you moving forward.
In the LIVE EXAMPLE section, I’ll try it from scratch, and you can watch where it takes me.
The Art of the Graphic Memoir is the capstone on my graphic memoir practice. I don’t expect to do any more direct autobio. At present I’m having too much fun finding a fictional voice do my talking. (But never say never.)
