What does the character in your head look like?

TUESDAY INSPIRATION

Morgan illustration.jpeg

One of our Tuesday inspirations this week is actually double-pronged. Found at medium, Danielle Morgan tells a beautiful, gentle moving story of creation and change in It’s All Process. The wonderful use of color and pencil texture is reminiscent of Aidan Koch (so the second inspiration for the week is Aidan Koch, SAW favorite).

Next up is a visual essay from Ben Passmore, Colony, Colony: The struggle for land in Vieques. It tells the story of a community oriented farm on an island in Puerto Rico, and the changing conditions for people following Hurricane Maria. Rendered in beautiful digital color, it’s a very thought-provoking read about place, culture and identity.

FREE RESOURCES

Have you been using our free resources? There’s a whole bank of them. Literally. An archive of materials that stretches beyond our class materials and snaps right back. Check it out for a mix of old and new, familiar and new territory. Maybe you want to start with this video from Justine about how to copy the great masters?

Thanks David for another great video resource about creative process from comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz.

“I can have all the ideas and plans about what I want it to look like, but when I’m actually in that moment and the work is telling me what to do... the work knows what it wants to be.”

IN FLOW

This week Tom posed the question, “What does the character in your head look like?” What does he or she look like? Imagine they are near your head all day. Get to know them. Draw them once you get to know them. Picturing them can help us become outside their drama. Being outside their drama can help us feel less oppressed by it!

Don't let them win!

FROM THE MEMOIR GROUP

Beth prompted a great discussion about personal stories and broader social events with her suggestion to do a little research. Not the personal or familial kind of research, but what’s public or even scientific... What new information exists that maybe relates to your story?
