CAKE 2024!

This past weekend SAW staffers Karlo Antunes and Meg Lentz (that’s me!) traveled to Chicago to run the SAW table at CAKE!

We had the honor and pleasure of being neighbors with the lovely Hyena Hell and josh bayer (not pictured </3), the coolest sweetest people at the expo!!!

And we got to see lots of familiar friendly faces like Debbe R-H and 2016 YLP alum Kiana Stewart!

I had the delight of meeting my YLP cohort-mate Kristin Kowal (left) in person for the first time! We traded some minis and Kristin was sweet enough to donate copies to the SAW table as well!

And I also got to meet YLP alum and my classmate from Tommi Parrish's Merch Table class, A.J. Delp (right), whose table (just on the other side of Josh and Hyena, lucky us!) and comics looked absolutely stellar :))

...as well as Tommi themself!! I sadly forgot to snap a picture but we did a little swap and I got some gems from their legendary ~merch table~

We of course also saw the wonderful Rob Clough tabling for Fieldmouse Press!

And boy o boy was CAKE a star-studded event, full of so many inspiring cartoonists. At Rob's encouragement, I gave some of my comics to many cartoonists and publishers I admire (😱), including John Porcellino who traded a King Cat issue with me (!!), Sophie Yanow, and Caroline Cash. Make sure you do the same at fests you attend!!!

The night before I ventured to Quimby's to see the launch of Caroline Cash's new PeePee PooPoo mini and got to meet her and Gina Wynbrandt!

SPEAKING OF QUIMBY'S: Karlo made the trek over to deliver lots of SAW anthologies! Many SAW comics now live in consignment there, waiting to be admired and purchased by comics lovers of the Chicago area and beyond!

I think that about sums up CAKE 2024 for us! Now we can look forward to...

SPX!!!

Come through in just over two weeks! Our founder Tom Hart and our lovely new Assistant Director Carly Shooster will be manning the table this time. This is also your chance to see Rob, Josh, Elise Dietrich, the Ignatz-nominated Emily Zilber, and lots and lots of other SAW faculty, alum, and friends <33

(And whether you go or not, it's not too late to vote in the Ignatz Awards—get your ballot and support Josh and Emily!!)

Cheers!

Meg
