History alone is always evolving, since new things are constantly surfacing about our past, and Comics History in the Western world is no different.

SAW’s Western Comics History course is always evolving as we find new sources to cover about diversity and technique in comics while also reflecting on how far comics have travelled to be where they are in today’s Western world.

Perseverance. It’s hard! Not only with one’s art, but often with other things in life that pile up and may take one away from doing art, or much of anything at all. But is giving up even harder to do? We’d like to share what some of our students have said about this common concern many face.

Seeking improvement is a part of being human. Most of us want to “upgrade,” “one-up,” and consistently advance in our life, especially in our creative journey. It’s natural and just comes with the territory of being human.

But how does one improve?

How do we get better, when progress feels so slow?

Sidney Davidson, a Teacher at SAW, offers some insight after being asked “How to Improve.”

Have you ever wanted to make a comic, but didn't know where to start? Are you an omnivorous artist that wants to try out new ideas? This workshop is for you! Jess Ruliffson will guide you through the process of idea-making, sketching layouts, and show a few inking techniques. By the end of the class, students will have inked their own one-page comic, and collaborated with attendees on an eight-panel mini-zine to take home!

Spend a week immersed in comics, learning from cartoonist and fan favorite creator of Underpants and Overbites Jackie E. Davis. From March 2-6, 2020, at Sequential Artists Workshop, in Gainesville, FL.

Emily Flake is back at SAW to teach gag cartooning, launching May 20.

In Drawing from the Depths, students develop authentic approaches to creating emotionally charged work without resorting to cliche or sentimentalism. In class, we’ll discuss works by artists who excel at delving into deep emotional terrain. Students select a theme or themes (such as desire, shame, ecstasy) to explore over the 6 week course. Short, experimental weekly assignments lead to a 2- or 3- page finished work. Source material may be autobiographical, nonfiction, or fiction.
